The Golf SV, the SV stands for Sports Van, could be the perfect all rounder. It is as good to drive as the hatchback with the boot space of the estate (up to 590 litres). The only drawback is there aren’t individual rear seats, so it isn’t quite as flexible with its space as the Citroën C4 Picasso. The rear seats do slide in a 60/40 split to maximise boot space (at the cost of rear legroom) and the doors are wide opening making the fitting of car seats easier. The excellent range of engines from the Golf are carried over and a body long crease in the metal does a good job of masking the extra height.
To Mobility customers the 2019 Golf SV is available in either Match Edition or GT Edition trim, which adds the winter pack (heated front seats) LED Headlights and climate control. The Match Edition trim is the pick as it has 16 inch alloy wheels, 8 inch touchscreen, Sat Nav, privacy glass, front fog lights, adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) including Front Assist, and City Emergency braking and parking sensors, front and rear. The sporty(ish) GT Edition adds 17 inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, automatic headlights with LED daytime running lights, ambient lighting, front fog lights incorporating LED technology and front and rear parking sensors.
Two petrol and two diesel engines are available for the Golf SV, the 1.0 litre petrol with 113bhp being a standout for those that do not need the extra grunt of a diesel, economy is an excellent 56.6 miles per gallon as a 6 speed manual or 7 speed dual clutch automatic. The other ‘cracker’ is the 1.5 litre petrol with 130 bhp (also with 150 as a 7 speed automatic) that can shut off up to two cylinders to aid fuel consumption, fantastic technology that really works, claimed economy is 55.4 miles per gallon as a six speed manual or 7 speed dual clutch Automatic (DSG). The 1.6 litre diesel with 115 bhp only has 5 gears as a manual car. The automatic only 2.0 litre diesel with 148bhp can return 60.1 mpg. The Golf SV is a throughly modern car, it ticks lots of boxes, economy, comfort and technology but it is quintessentially Volkswagen; safe, practical and built to last.
The Golf SV is no longer in production and has been removed from the VW range, the stock cars have now evaporated and despite it showing on the present VW Motability price list, the car has been removed from Motability.
