SsangYong Turismo

SsangYong Turismo and all SSangYong cars removed from Scheme 10th January 2019. We will find out their intentions.

SsangYong Turismo motability carSsangYong are the forth largest South Korean car manufacturer behind Hyundai, Kia and Daewoo, famed for their large all wheel drive vehicles. There is no car larger than the Turismo on the Scheme, to give you some idea of its size, it is taller, 13cm longer and 85kg heavier than a Range Rover.

SsangYong Turismo Motability cut awayThe Turismo has a 2,2 3 seat configuration with the middle row housing two (non swivelling) captain seats that leaves room for a walkway for three adults to make their way to the rear bench and even with the seven seats intact the Turismo hosts an 875 litre boot, nearly three times that of the Ford Galaxy, but unlike the Ford the seats can only fold in half and not into the floor to make a flat loading area.

The rear wheel or all wheel drive Turismo has been revised for 2016 and given a new 176bhp 2.2-litre diesel engine (in place of the old 2.0-litre) with either a six-speed manual or a Mercedes-Benz sourced seven-speed automatic gearbox, and selectable four-wheel drive and, for a car of this size, it’s also quite easy to manoeuvre at low speeds. Economy of this new engine is much improved but it can still only return 39.2 mpg as a manual or 36.2 as an all wheel drive automatic. The 400nm of peak torque is avaialble from low down in the rev range, 1400 rpm, but it runs out of puff at a a lowly 2800 revs.  Top speed is 116 miles per hour and 0-62 is an estimated 10 seconds.

SsangYong Rexton Motability carThe Turismo comes in three variants, the SE, EX and Automatic only ELX. Air conditioning, leather covered steering wheel and gear knob, a high grade stereo with both MP3 and Bluetooth capabilities are standard across the range. The EX adds an electric height adjustable driver’s seat, 16″ alloy wheels, leather seats, heated front seats, privacy glass and rear parking sensors. The ELX has in addition cruise control, heated front windscreen, automatic headlights and wipers and 17″ alloy wheels.

The Turismo is a welcome addition to the Scheme, it is clearly not as technologically advanced, as economical or as engaging a drive as the Volkswagen Sharan or Ford Galaxy, but if size is everything to you then the Turismo is the place to start. As for value for money if you compare the Advance Payment as a percentage of the retail price then the Turismo appears expensive, this is due to projected resale value being only a third of the retail cost compared to around fifty percent for the competition.
