The MG4 is a fully electric car, similar in size to a Volkswagen Golf, Ford Puma and the electric cars Hyundai Kona and Volkswagen ID3 (both no longer on the Scheme). The sloping sleek lines lead to small rear windows and rear passenger space, while adequate, is not class leading. The boot is a competitive 363 litres but down on the Renault Megane at 440 litres. The driving position is excellent, the ride smooth and relaxed, the steering accurate. The short bonnet makes for an easy to manoeuvre experience and enhances the drivers view of the road ahead, please note the front passenger does not have the same adjustment for comfort as the driver.  The electric motor is attached to the rear wheels so the MG4 can be driven in a ‘spirited’ manner meaning it’s as happy speeding through the back roads as it is poodling through town.

Two trim lines are avaialble, SE and Trophy, all cars have a 7 inch driver information display that is easy to view, the 10.25 inch infotainment is centrally mounted and offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, also included is MG pilot which is a suite of driving assistance tools including adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, emergency braking and bicycle detection. Trophy models add to MG Pilot blind spot detection, lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert and door open warning. Also included is MG ismart, an app that controls charging, finding charge points and pre heating or cooling the car. The trophy model adds a 2 extra speakers, satellite navigation, wireless phone charging, 360 degree camera, leather to the seats, electric 6 way adjustment for the driver and both a heated steering wheel and front seats.

MG4 is available in two battery sizes, 51kWh and 64kWh, both are single speed automatic, the smaller battery produces 168 brake horse power and can propel the car from standstill to 62 miles per hour in 7.5 seconds and the WLTP range is quoted as 217 miles, you will get less than this for higher speed journeys and more for lower speed trips, the opposite of a regular fuelled car, the car will also be more efficient in warmer weather than cold. The larger battery car produces 203 brake horse power but due to the extra weight of the batteries is slower to 62mph, covering the sprint in 7.7 seconds, the range increases to a quoted 279 miles in SE trim or 270 miles in Trophy trim. Charging times from a 7.4 kW wall box, the type usually fitted to your home, from empty to full is 8.15 hours for the smaller battery and 10 hours for the 64kWh battery. Fast charging from a 15okW public fast charger will replenish the battery at 10% battery to 80% battery is 39 minutes for the 51kWh battery and 35 minutes for the 64kWh battery.
