The latest addition to the Fiat 500 range is the seven seat 500L MPW, Multi Purpose Wagon, which is set on the same platform as the 500L but adds 20cm in length, this extra is all at the rear of the car thus increasing the boot capacity from 410 litres in the 500L to 638 in this car, or if you wish a pair of seats that can fit persons under 5′ 4″. The extra length does give the car a unique look, one that takes a little getting used to, but for the school run or a netball team the 500L MPW offers a compact and quirky way to travel.
Five versions of the 500L MPW are available, the Urban, City Cross, Cross, S-Design and the limited edition 120th. The 120th has 16 inch Alloy wheels with black finish, Body coloured electrically adjustable heated door mirrors, front fog lights, rear parking sensors, 7 inch Touchscreen radio with bluetooth, USB, Aux-in and DAB and Apple CarPlay / AndroidAuto Connectivity, adjustable steering wheel with audio controls, cruise control, air conditioning, remote control central door locking and rain and dusk sensor, also included is 6 months Apple music.
It is impossible not to admire the 500L MPW, the ability to seat seven, all be it small people, in a car this size is nothing short of amazing and the fact the 500L MPW still retains the DNA of the uber cool Fiat 500 is great – BUT, the fact that the rear seats split 60 40 is in our view a design flaw, if the Fiat had three individual seats in the second row then access to the third row would be much easier as when you have young children that require car seats you position these next to the door so you can put them in position and with a child car seat in place you cannot tumble seats forward to gain access to the third row. The Ford Grand C-Max has adopted this design as its middle seat simply folds away. From our experience when transporting multiple passengers you want them in the car as quickly as possible and not lined up on the pavement waiting to gain access to the car.
As a seven seat car the 500L MPW has a single option of a 1.4 litre petrol with 118 bhp is a good option, top speed is 117 and 0-62 time is a creditable 10.3 seconds, the fuel economy is a little disappointing at 40.9 miles per gallon and there is no Automatic option. Prices start at £56.50 per week where you keep £4.70 of your PIP/DLA payment.
