Volkswagen Sharan

Volkswagen Sharan Motability carThe Volkswagen Sharan is a large MPV with seven individual seats for adults, and is able to offer 300 litres of luggage space with all seven seats in use, perfect for pushchairs and the shopping, only the largest of MPV’s can offer this level of space.  Apart from subtle design differences the Volkswagen Sharan is the same car as the Seat Alhambra (Seat are part of the Volkswagen Group) and both share production in Palmela, Portugal. As with the Alhambra the rear doors are sliding by design, which offers a wider aperture for accessing the second and third row of seats, perfect for strapping the children into their seats, which can be electrically operated if you are willing to part with £655, we would not be.

The Volkswagen Sharan feels very well built with high quality materials, it feels a very safe and secure way to carry your family, visibility is excellent from the high driving position and the Sharan is very comfortable for all seven inhabitants regardless of their size.  The only scrimping comes in the entry level cars equipment, the ‘S”, which is why we recommend the SE model as it has 16″ alloys wheels (though we would like to see 17″ wheels on a car this size) adaptive cruise control, chrome window surrounds, roof rails, 3 zone climate control, under seat storage, leather trimmed multifunction steering wheel, a small in dash multi function computer, automatic lights and parking sensors. All models now come with a 6.5″ touchscreen media system that can stream media from your mobile phone. Heated front seats are part of the winter pack at £215.

The pick of the engines is the two litre 150 brake horse power diesel, which as a six speed manual or DSG automatic offers an excellent combination of power and economy, 9.9 seconds from standstill to 62 miles per hour and a top speed of 120 miles per hour. Official economy figures suggest 40+ miles per gallon is achievable. The 1.4 litre petrol TSi offers 148 bhp but lacks the pulling power of the diesel particularly if you are filling your Sharan. The pick of the engines is the new two litre 181 brake horse power diesel, which as a six speed DSG automatic offers an excellent combination of power and economy and a towing capacity of 2200kg, WLTP mpg figures suggest 40mpg is achievable. (this car was priced at £1099 AP at the start of Q3 but now been removed)
