Volkswagen Polo motability carThe Volkswagen Polo, updated in July 2014, is a three and five door small car that was awarded World Car of the Year in 2010, and aside from a new grille, lights and bumpers VW has stuck to the award winning design. The Polo feels every part a Volkswagen despite its diminutive size, the simplicity of design leads to a clear and intuitive layout and the addition of the touch screen information interface ensures the Polo keeps up with the competition as it’s fighting in a tough division; the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa, Honda Jazz and Renault Clio are all excellent cars and the Clio has a built in Sat Nav which is a £700 extra on the Polo.

Volkswagen Polo motability car 2014 dashThe Polo is available in a ‘S’, “Match’, ‘SEL’ and Blue GT trims the entry car is available with or without manual air conditioning as well as electric front windows, Bluetooth telephone connectivity paired to a 5″ information system and safety equipment including an automatic post-collision braking system and electronic stability control, We would recommend moving up to the Match, primarily as the touch screen is increased in size to 6.5″ on top of 15″ Alloy wheels, body-coloured mirrors and door handles, leather trimmed multifunction steering wheel and remote central locking. The SEL tops out the range with the addition cruise control, parking sensors, front armrests and fancy 16″ alloys. The Blue GT is paired to a 150bhp 1.4 litre petrol unit with hot hatch performance, 0.62 in 7.8 seconds and a top speed of over 130mph, claimed economy of 58.9mpg makes it a cracking package, it looks the part too with 17” alloys, differential lock to aid traction, darkened rear lights and BlueGT styling.

Volkswagen Polo motability car 2014 bluegtThe engine range has been updated too all EU6 emissions compliant, with fuel efficiency gains as much as 23 per cent over its predecessors.  The line-up consists of a pair of 1.0 litre three-cylinder petrol engines with either 60bhp or 75bhp, two 1.2 TSI four-cylinder petrol choices of 89bhp or 108bhp, a 1.4 TSI with 148bhp and a pair of three-cylinder 1.4 TDI units with 75bhp and 89bhp, in all quite confusing particularly as not all engines are available in all trims. The 1.0 litre petrol with 75bhp which can return 58.9 miles per gallon yet has enough power to keep you entertained, 13.8 seconds 0-62 compared to over 15 for the smaller output version, the 1.4 diesel can return 83 miles per gallon and still hit the tape in 12.5 seconds. Both cars have a top speed of 108 miles per hour. The aforementioned BlueGT is a hot hatch with performance to match, 0-62 in 7.8 seconds, and astounding economy of 58.9 mpg too. The 7 speed dual clutch Automatic is paired with the 90bhp 1.2 litre petrol with economy of 60.7 miles per gallon and a 0-62 time of 10.5 seconds.
