Smart ForFour

Smart ForFour Motability car sideSmart are owned by Daimler AG, the same company that own Mercedes Benz, which is why many Smart dealerships are attached to a Mercedes dealer. The ForFour is manufactured in Hambach, France, just a few miles form the German border. The ForFour shares the latest ForTwo’s mechanicals (and that of the Renault Twingo), meaning the ForFour model is a rear-engined, rear-wheel drive car, the advantage being that there is a shorter bonnet which Smart have utilised by making the turning circle a minute 8.65 meters making it a perfect City car for the 21st Century.

Prime models bring a retracting fabric roof and black leather seats – heated up front. Prime Sport gets the sportiest looks in the range courtesy of 16-inch black alloy wheels, lowered sports suspension, a chrome exhaust pipe and a sports steering wheel. Access to the rear is also incredibly easy thanks to rear doors that open to 85 degrees, making fitting child seats a doddle. While entry and exit is easy for adults, there’s not much room in the rear.

The Comfort Pack (£295) adds a height-adjustable driver’s seat and steering wheel, which should make it easier to get a comfortable driving position, while the pack’s electrically adjustable mirrors are heated to stop fogging. The £795 Premium Pack includes all those features and adds rear-parking sensors and sat-nav.

In terms of interior space, the ForFour lags behind rivals such as the Hyundai i10 or Volkswagen UP! but it does have a range of neat touches that maximize what space that is there. The 180-litre boot is a little small but the rear seats can be locked more upright which gives a nice rectangular load bay. The good news is if you need more luggage room the rear seats in the ForFour fold completely flat, freeing up a maximum of 975 litres.

The 1.0 litre three cylinder petrol is the only engine available to Mobility customers, with 70bhp it can reach 62 miles per hour in 15.9 seconds as a 5 speed manual or 16.9 seconds as a twin clutch six speed automatic and both cars can hit a top speed of 94 miles per hour and both versions can return a claimed 67.3 miles per gallon combined.

The Smart ForFour is a super looking easy to drive city car, realistic pricing makes it a must view if you want a cost effective way of buzzing around town, we would like the Brabus version with its bigger output added to the Scheme.
