Skoda Rapid Spaceback

Skoda Rapid Spaceback Motability car sideThe Skoda Rapid Spaceback is entering a congested and fiercely competitive sector of the motoring world; the two big players are the Ford Focus and Volkswagen Golf but you also have the likes of the Hyundai i30, Vauxhall Astra, Kia Cee’d, Seat Leon and the brand new Peugeot 308. So can the Spaceback compete? Not really is the quick answer, but while there is nothing to make the Spaceback stand out against the competition in many ways that is its charm, (the panoramic glass roof is a £1000 extra).  The Exterior of the Spaceback is quite plain looking and the inside quite dull (there are no big touchscreen pads with integrated sat nav as in the 308), the boot at 415 litres is neither the smallest or largest and it’s not as much fun to drive as the Focus but handles well enough. So if you are just after a practical car with excellent rear passenger space and your local garage is a Skoda dealership then the Spaceback makes for a very considered choice.

The engines for the Rapid are the 1.2 petrol with either 90 or 110bhp, which is the pick if you are a low mileage driver particularly as in 110bhp guise you have six gears as apposed to five for the rest of the range the larger version can return 57.7 miles per gallon and is sprightly enough to reach 62 miles per hour in 9.7 seconds.  If you prefer a diesel then the choice is between a 1.4 litre and a 1.6 with 90 and 115bhp respectively, the smaller can return 78.5mpg and reach 62mph in 11.6 seconds while the larger unit can reach 62 in 9.9 and return 67.3mpg. For automatic drivers the the 90bhp petrol and 90bhp diesel can be paired to a seven speed DSG dual clutch gearbox.
