Seat Ibiza

The fifth-generation SEAT Ibiza, based on the VW Group’s all-new small car platform called MQB A0, which will also underpin new versions of the Volkswagen Polo and Audi A1 and SEAT Arona crossover. The Ibiza looks like a shrunken Leon, and that’s certainly no bad thing, with sharp creases around its body work and distinctive LED lights featuring on some models. We think it’s one of the finest-looking superminis out there. The Ibiza is in a very tough sector, up against some the top selling cars in the UK, the Ford Fiesta and the Vauxhall Corsa to name only two.

Entry-level S trim includes Bluetooth, air-conditioning and front electric windows, SE adds LED running lights, alloy wheels and a colour infotainment screen, SE Technology brings sat nav, together with an eight-inch infotainment screen, while FR bundles sports seats, suspension, a driving mode selector and a bodykit. Top-spec Xcellence boasts Alcantara suede effect seats, cruise control and all-round parking sensors.

Interior space and boot room are excellent thanks to a 60mm increase in the wheelbase. This translates to enough space for four adults to fit comfortably, as well as their luggage in a boot at 355 litres is only 25 litres shy of the space available in the back of the Volkswagen Golf .

Entry-level cars get a 78bhp 1.0-litre ‘MPI’ engine, but the best choice is the three-cylinder TSI 1.0-litre turbo-petrol. This is such a competent and willing engine that it’s even found its way into the latest Volkswagen Golf, and in the smaller Ibiza it appeals even more. You can have it with 94 or 113bhp. Even the entry-level 1.0-litre ‘MPI’ petrol feels quicker than its lethargic 0-62mph figure of 14.7 seconds suggests; it’s free-revving in town and takes motorway driving in its stride. Economy for the 1.0-litre turbo petrol officially returns 60.1 mpg in both power outputs, with the 78bhp engine being roughly 3mpg less efficient. A DSG automatic gearbox is available with the 113bhp 1.0-litre petrol engine.
