Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questionsCan I get a Motability car?

In order to be eligible for a Motability car you must be in receipt of either:

  • High Rate Mobility DLA (Disability Living Allowance)
  • Enhanced Mobility PIP (Personal Independence Payment)
  • Be the Carer/Parent of a child (over three years in age) that qualifies for High Rate Mobility DLA
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

You must have 12 months left on your award to order a Vehicle.

*WPMS weekly payments increased on 9th April 2018 by £1.95 per week to £66.75 compared to a £1.75 weekly increase in DLA/PIP/AFIP to £59.75. This 3% increase is based on the CPI (Consumer Price Inflation) figure from September of the previous year. The 2017 increase was 1%.

You exchange your award to lease a vehicle through the Scheme, the lease lasts three years. The payment is an automated process, the collection date of the vehicle will be the trigger for the payments to be sent to Motability Operations.

Vehicle pricing falls into three categories:

  • Less than your award amount. Presently 108 cars are priced less than the full award, prices start at £48.50 per week (May 2018) meaning you will keep £11.25 per week of your award.
  • Full Award or No Advance Payment. Presently 265 cars
  • Vehicles that require an Advance Payment. Presently 2219 cars

What is an Advance Payment?

The Scheme needs to offer cars to suit everyone, therefore for the more expensive vehicles the award of £59.75 per week (£9321 over three years) is not sufficient to cover the costs of your lease so an advance payment is required to top up the costs. Depending on the car you choose this can be anything between £45 and £3750 (or even more for large van based people carriers) This must be settled in full when you collect the car. Many dealerships ask for a deposit (around £250) at order point, some don’t.

Advance Payments for WPMS are around £1000 less than those of DLA/PIP/AFIP as they receive £66.75 per week compared to £59.75.  Even with the larger award there are no extra vehicles available to War Pensioners.
