Fiat 500L

Fiat 500L motability carThe Fiat 500 has been a justified success for Fiat, the 500L is a 5 seat grown up version with two extra doors and space for the growing family, from the front the big brother 500L looks just that but from any other angle the waters become more muddied as the increase in size means it looses the aaah! factor of the original car.  We are always in favor of cars that don’t take the safe route when it comes to design but can’t make up our mind if we feel cheated that Fiat are extending the 500 brand in such a blatant way, bear in mind the 500L MPW will seat seven. If you are looking for a versatile car that is a bit more funky than a Ford B Max then the Fiat 500L is certainly that, a delightful driving position with acres of glass make it a very easy car to drive, and manoeuvre, around town.

The 500L is well equipped, all models come with cruise control, electric front windows, fully adjustable leather covered steering wheel with audio controls, electrically adjustable door mirrors, leather gear knob covering and height adjustable driver’s seat, you can choose from three models, the funky ‘Pop Star’ with its high gloss painted dashboard, 16″ alloy wheels, chrome inserts in the body panels, a 5″ touchscreen audio with bluetooth phone and music streaming.  The Easy trim replaces the alloy wheels with steel wheels which is a shame but you do get reversing sensors, electric rear windows and a soft touch dashboard. The range topping Lounge has the luxury of a panoramic glass roof, electronic climate control, silver alloy wheels, front fog lights and automatic lights.

Two petrol and two diesel engines are available, the 1.4 petrol is avaialble as a 94 bhp or 118 bhp ‘T-Jet’. The economy for both engines is a little disappointing, 46.3 and 42.2 miles per gallon respectively, the more powerful version is more fun and can reach 62mph in 10.2 seconds as apposed to 12.8 seconds. If you are after super economy then the 95bhp 1.3 diesel is your choice, start stop technology pushes the economy up to over 70 miles per gallon when paired to the 5 speed semi-automatic gearbox but progress is a little slow, 0-62 miles per hour takes 14.8 seconds. The 1.6 litre diesel with 120 brake horse power is better all rounder with economy of 67.3 mpg and a 0-62 mph time of 10.7 seconds but it is too expensive.

Fiat 500L motability car sideThe 500L makes for an interesting option, five can be transported in comfort and still enjoy 400 litres of boot space. The Fiat designers have kept a lot of the good things of the original 500 and added a practicality that so many of us require, we like it but can understand why people don’t but you do have to applaud Fiat for making a funky family car.

This quarter post WLTP only the 94bhp manual car is avaialble.
