BMW 3 Series Saloon

The BMW 3 series has been with us since 1975 and February 2012 saw the launch of the F30, the sixth version of the most important car for BMW, it accounts for nearly a third of all BMW’s sold. A 2015 facelift made minor changes with new headlights and reprofiled front and rear bumpers, the headlights feature LED daytime running lights on all editions and all models now come with a built in Sat Nav and upgraded suspension. This, the largest 3 series ever, is not a radical departure from the previous model but the designer was definitely looking over the shoulder of the person that carved the current BMW 5 series. The new 3 series is an improvement over the outgoing model, lighter, sharper styled, larger inside with a bigger boot and a better level of standard equipment.

The BMW 3 series is only available to mobility customers in either ‘SE’ or Sport, the M-Sport and Luxury are not represented, if you have the extra cash then there are a myriad of extras you can add to your SE or Sport, which as standard has the BMW iDrive that controls the Bluetooth telephone, USB audio interface connected to the free-standing 6.5″ Control Display with built in Sat nav, you also enjoy cruise control, multi function leather steering wheel with reach and rake adjustment, leather gear-knob and handbrake, two zone automatic air conditioning, rear parking sensors, 17″ alloy wheels, a start stop button and all round electric windows. The Sport trim adds to the standard SE trim bits of chrome around the car and additional sport detailing as well as sports seats.

The two engines avaialble for the 3 series are both 2.0 litre in size, one petrol and one diesel, with the diesel avaialble in two or four (xDrive) wheel drive. The Manual only 2.0 petrol, badged 320i, has 181 bhp and can get you to 62 mph in 7.2 seconds and return up to 48.7 miles per gallon. The 2.0 diesel, badged 320d, is the most popular engine choice, for good reason, it has 187 bhp with an impressive 400nm of torque giving it loads of low rev grunt and can reach 62 mph in 7.3 seconds yet return up to 67.3 miles per gallon. The Automatic 8 speed gearbox paired to this engine is excellent and incredibly smooth. The 4 wheel drive car (xDrive) adds security to those that fear the rear wheel drive cars performance on slippy roads and is an excellent choice.

BMW have struck gold again with the 3 series, it is the new standard that other cars will be judged by, now if only they would stop pulling out in front of me.
